Sex-Specific Immunoengineering

Immunoengineering is a new discipline that creates and applies engineering tools such as nanotechnology to investigate and modulate the immune system. Immunoengineering is shown to unlock new tools for biomedical discovery and innovation and has the potential to safely and effectively treat myriad diseases, from cancer to infectious diseases to autoimmune disorders, in novel ways. While there has been rapid progress in the field of Immunoengineering recently, there are also numerous challenges in the field. One persistent challenge is understanding sex-specific effects on immune function. Recent findings suggest that investigating sex differences in a variety of diseases, including cancers, has the capacity to improve therapy for both sexes and to discover sex-specific protective mechanisms against disease.
